Winter brings long nights, crisp air and extraordinary opportunities to experience Voyageurs after dark.

A WINTER DAY ON SPHUNGE ISLAND

Some winter adventures don't need much of an itinerary.
When winter conditions allow access, Sphunge Island becomes one of Voyageurs National Park's most delightfully simple places to spend a winter day. Grab the sleds, pack a picnic and a thermos of something warm, and head out onto frozen Lake Kabetogama for an afternoon on the island.
Race down the sledding hills. Warm up beside a fire. Make s'mores. Lace up your skates when the rink is available. Or claim a picnic table, pour the cocoa and watch everyone else make just one more run down the hill.
There are hills for younger sledders and bigger kids-at-heart, plenty of room to play, and the novelty of realizing you're spending the afternoon on an island in the middle of a frozen lake.
It's simple. It's wonderfully old-fashioned. And it might just become one of your favorite days of the trip.

Go a Little Wider
Not every winter adventure needs a trail to follow.

FOLLOW THE TRACKS
Winter leaves clues everywhere.
Fresh snow turns the forest into a storybook of tracks and trails. Keep your eyes open for signs of wildlife crossing the snow, moving through the woods, or traveling across the frozen landscape. You may not see who left them—but sometimes figuring that out is half the fun.

Winter looks good on Voyageurs.
Low winter sun, snow-covered pines, frozen shorelines and wide-open lake views make this an incredible season to bring a camera—or just keep your phone handy. Sunrise, sunset and those blue-and-gold hours in between can make even a familiar view look completely new.

For those who like their adventures a little colder.
Winter camping offers one of the quietest ways to experience Voyageurs National Park. The campsites visitors reach by boat in summer take on an entirely different character in winter, surrounded by snow, solitude and dark skies. For those prepared to take it on, an overnight in the park can be one unforgettable winter adventure.
A Dark Sky Destination
Voyageurs National Park is designated as an International Dark Sky Park, recognized for its exceptionally low levels of light pollution and expansive night skies.
On cool, clear nights, the Milky Way stretches across the sky, and during the right conditions, the northern lights can make an appearance—reflected in the still water below.
