Getting Around Kabetogama

Life here revolves around the water.

In the warmer months, boats are the primary way to explore the lake — whether launching from a public access point or heading out directly from your resort’s dock. Many resorts offer rentals, making it easy to get out on the lake even if you don’t bring your own.

In winter, the landscape transforms. Ice roads connect areas of the lake, and snowmobiles become a common way to travel, explore, and access fishing spots.

General Planning

What to Pack

Weather in northern Minnesota can shift throughout the day, so layers are key — especially in the mornings and evenings. And if the chill catches you by surprise, don’t worry… a cozy souvenir sweatshirt is never far away.

Groceries, Fuel & Essentials

You’ll find convenient options nearby for groceries, fuel, bait, bug spray, and everyday essentials. Many resorts also carry basic supplies on-site, so you’re never far from what you need.

Fishing Gear & Licenses

Fishing is a big part of the experience here. If you’re bringing your own gear, you’re all set

— but if not, rentals, bait, and tackle are widely available locally.

A valid Minnesota fishing license is required and can be purchased through the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources or at nearby retailers, such as Gateway General Store.

Rentals & Guides

From boats and pontoons to experienced local fishing guides, there are plenty of options to help you make the most of your time on the water.

During peak summer months, it’s always a good idea to reserve early.

Traveling with Pets

We love pets here — and many resorts do too. That said, each property has its own policies,

so it’s best to check ahead before booking to make sure it’s a good fit for everyone.

Driving Directions

If you’re traveling north via Interstate 35, take Exit 237 onto MN Highway 33 in Cloquet.

Follow Highway 33 until it meets Highway 53 North.

Continue on Highway 53 until you reach the Gateway General Store—home of the iconic “Big Kabetogama Fish.”

From there, turn onto Gamma Road and follow it straight to the lake.

The Most Simple Driving Directions

If you’re coming from either the north or south, the directions are simple: turn onto Gamma Road from Highway 53 at the Gateway Store, and you’re on your way.

Kabetogama is the kind of place that feels like the end of the road… in the best way. Because here, the road doesn’t really end—it just gives way to something better.
