PLAY ON
kabetogama lake
From sunrise on the water to evenings by the fire, Kabetogama Lake offers a wide range of ways to spend your time—whether you’re here to explore, unwind, or do a little of both.
Cast a line at first light, spend the afternoon out on the lake, or take things slow with a quiet walk, a scenic ride, or a nap in the shade. However your days unfold, there’s space here to make them your own.
Some days are full.
Others are slow.
And many fall somewhere in between.
On the Water
Time on the water isn’t just something to do here — it’s the experience that defines Lake Kabetogama. With miles of open water, quiet bays, and islands waiting to be explored, there’s no shortage of places to go — or reasons to stay out a little longer.
Head out for a day of fishing, cruise along the shoreline, or spend the afternoon tubing and swimming with family. For those looking to explore deeper, boating into Voyageurs National Park opens up an entirely different side of the lake—one that feels untouched, quiet, and expansive.
Whether you bring your own boat, rent one locally, or book a boat tour there’s no better way to experience Kabetogama than from the water.

On the Land
Step off the water and into a different pace of exploration. The surrounding Northwoods offer quiet trails, scenic drives, and plenty of opportunities to slow down and take it all in.
Spend time hiking, watching for wildlife, or taking a drive toward places like Ash River or Crane Lake. You might find yourself stopping more than you expected — whether it’s for a photo, a trailhead, or just a moment of stillness.
Out here, even the simplest outings tend to turn into something more.
Evening & Night Experiences
Evenings on Kabetogama have a rhythm all their own. As the sun sets, the lake settles into stillness, and the sky begins to take over.
Campfires, quiet conversations, and long sunsets turn into nights filled with stars.
With minimal light pollution and wide-open skies, this area is one of the best places in the region for stargazing—and if the timing is right, catching a glimpse of the northern lights.

Seasonal Experiences
Kabetogama changes with the seasons—and each one brings its own kind of experience.
Summer is all about the water and long, beautiful days that melt into night skies like no other place in the world.
Fall brings color, crisp air, and quieter getaways.
Winter transforms the lake into something entirely different. Snowmobiling trails, ice fishing spots, and even sledding out on Sphunge Island create a new way to explore the same place.
Springtime is truly renewing and restorative as wildlife migrates home, flowers pop up from the ground, and the leaves on the trees begin to bud.
No matter when you visit, there’s always something waiting for you here.
Rainy Day Activities
Not every day calls for time on the water—and that’s part of the charm. When the weather shifts, there’s still plenty to explore just beyond the shoreline.
Take a short drive into International Falls or Ranier for local shops, dining, and a change of pace, or spend time browsing small stores, picking up something cozy, or enjoying a relaxed meal.
For a bit of history and local flavor, stop by the Koochiching County Museum or visit Smokey Bear Park. You can also warm up at a nearby distillery, settle in with a cup of coffee, or simply take a scenic drive and see the Northwoods in a different light.
And sometimes, the best rainy day plans are the simplest. Many resorts offer board games, cards, and other activities you can play at the cabin. Or simply enjoy a good book and listen to the rain fall over Lake Kabetogama.

Local Attractions
Beyond the day-to-day activities, the Kabetogama area is home to a handful of unique places worth seeking out.
Explore the waterways of Voyageurs National Park, visit the historic Ellsworth Rock Gardens tucked along the shoreline, or take a boat trip to Kettle Falls for a true Northwoods experience. We have local boat tour guides who can take you anywhere you want to go on the lake.
Wildlife enthusiasts can make the trip to the Vince Shute Bear Sanctuary for a rare opportunity to observe black bears in their natural habitat, while others may enjoy discovering historic rock paintings hidden within the park.
These are the kinds of places that turn a good trip into one you’ll remember—and often bring people back again.
