Imagine
a day when all you have to do is plan fun.
Explore the splendor of Kabetogama Lake. Early risers often hear the lonely echoing calls of loons as
they answer each other across the dusky early morning waters.
The woeful sounds will raise goose bumps on the back of your neck. Gather
your group, pack a picnic lunch and GO…
Cruise
among the labyrinth of pine and aspen covered granite islands; view bald eagles,
osprey and pelicans. Keep your eye
on the shoreline for deer and bear or a rare sighting of a moose.
The
most popular picnic site on Kabetogama’s north shore is the Ellsworth Rock
Gardens. This labor of love began
in 1944 and was completed in 1965 by Chicago building contractor J.E. Ellsworth.
Now in the process of being restored, floral remnants and rock statuary
combine with a dramatic view of the lake you won’t want to miss.
From
here Kabetogama Lake and Voyageurs National Park are yours to experience.
Kabetogama
Resorts provide a variety of camping opportunities from primitive tenting to
full hookup R.V. sites. Many
require reservations.
If
you’re an adventurous soul who like to explore voyageur-style, try the boat
shuttle services available into the Peninsula back-country trails.
Located deep in the heart of the park, the Peninsula separates Kabetogama
from Rainy Lake, is accessible by boat and traversed by two main hiking trails.
The Locator Lake trail near the west end of Kabetogama leads to one of
over 20 remote lakes on the Peninsula. On
the east end is the Cruiser Lake trail system.
It consists of 21 miles of trail, connecting several wilderness campsites
between Lost Bay on Kabetogama and Anderson Bay on Rainy.
The new Mica Bay trail enters the Cruiser Lake system from the west end
of Namakan.
The
national park provides canoes and rowboats on the Peninsula, free-of-charge, to
navigate these interior lakes and the beautiful Chain-of-Lakes waterway.
Many
primitive campsites are provided on islands within Voyageurs National Park.
No reservations needed, first-come, first-served.
Others
may check out Wooden-frog State Forest Campground with 62 rustic sites.
For
more information on primitive camping in the park, call the visitor center at
